Pet Preparedness

Don’t forget your pets during an emergency. The Seminole Tribe of Florida does not currently offer pet sheltering services. Whether you will be staying at home with your pet or taking them to a pet friendly shelter, keep these pet safety tips in mind during emergencies.

Protect your pet in the event of an emergency:

  • Keep vaccinations up-to-date and store a copy of these records with the “Emergency Pet Kit.”
  • Keep a current color photograph showing distinguishing markings with your “Emergency Pet Kit.”
  • Keep up-to-date identification on a collar and tag for your pet. ID tags should contain the pet’s name, your telephone number and any urgent medical needs.
  • Preplan for an evacuation. Research safe places for you to take your pet (i.e. hotels, motels, kennels, friends, family, etc.)
  • Have a properly sized pet carrier for each animal. Carriers should be large enough for the animal to stand and turn around.
  • If your pet is on medication or a special diet, find out from your veterinarian what you should do in case you have to leave it alone for several days.

If you must leave your pet behind:

  • Put your pet in a safe, secure room without windows but with adequate ventilation (utility area or bathroom).
  • Leave enough food to last for seven days.
  • Fill up the sink, bathtub and containers that won’t tip over easily with water. Your pet will be under stress and may drink more water than usual. One to two gallons of water per day per pet can be used as a guideline.
  • Leave familiar bedding and safe toys that your pet is used to.
  • Don’t confine dogs and cats in the same space.
  • Ensure that your pet is wearing identification tags.
  • Place a notice on your front door that there are pets in the house and where they are located.
  • Provide a telephone number where you can be reached.
